ABOUT KIDS MAKE BEATS
Kids Make Beats started off as an after-school music production program for elementary students in Richmond, CA. It was created by Kaila Love, who combined her passion for music and education to craft a program that is fun, interactive, and kid-centered.
The mission of Kids Make Beats is to make music production accessible for any child with an internet connection.
With the Kids Make Beats curriculum, students don't need to have any prior music experience nor any special equipment. We use an online DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) that allows students to start making music with just their laptop or tablet. This also allows them to take their music on the go and continue working on it across different devices.

Kaila Love became the first in her family to graduate from college when she earned a B.A. from UC Berkeley in 2014 with the help of a Bay Area non-profit called 10,000 Degrees. Upon graduation, she went on to work for them as the Curriculum Development Fellow. Using these skills, she's gone on to create unique, student-centered Hip Hop and Music Production curriculums, teaching K-12 students all around the Bay Area.
In 2019, she earned her associate's degree in Recording Arts from Los Medanos College, where she learned music production and audio engineering skills. Before then, her primary specialty was rapping and music marketing. Now, she brings all of these skills to Kids Make Beats.
Megan is part of the 2% of women producers working in the music industry. Her original curriculum garnered the attention of Facebook and she contributed to their Beats Unlocked educational program. In addition to music production, Megan specializes in rapping, songwriting, music video production, and curating live events.
She is particularly passionate about creating opportunities for women in the music industry and founded Queens of the Underground, a quarterly Hip Hop showcase featuring an all women line-up. Her music has been featured in independent films and in the NBA2k21 video game.

Kids Make Beats in Less Than an Hour.
Beat Creation
Even students who have never made a beat before can start by combining pre-made loops to start making music in minutes. Students who are more comfortable with playing their own melodies can record them.
DAW Operation
DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation. This is where students create the beats. In doing so, they learn basic DAW functions that can be applied to more advanced DAWs as they progress.
Sound Recording
Even students who have never made a beat before can start by combining pre-made loops to start making music in minutes. Students who are more comfortable with playing their own melodies can record them.
Song Writing
Even if students want to stick to the production side of creation, it's still helpful to learn songwriting. They will learn the parts of a song (like the chorus and verse), how to create a mood, and how to write basic rhyme schemes.
Visual Design
Students will also learn the visual side of music. We assist in cover art design, so students can create a full, ready-to-market song, with visuals that match their musical creation.
Collaboration
Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with other kids in a safe and supportive environment. With our community and school network, we're able to pair them up on projects.
